PYP PROJECTS IN AFRICA

DIGNITY RESTORED CAMPAIGN

058.JPG

The economic crisis in Zimbabwe has left many women unable to afford underwear and sanitary products thus threatening their dignity. Many women have substituted sanitary ware with rags or newspapers which has led to various vaginal infections. The 'Dignity Restored' campaign is aimed at restoring these young women's dignity by donating underwear and sanitary products as part of a HIV and AIDS sensitising campaign for young girls. We are collecting BRAND NEW knickers of any size and colour as well as sanitary pads and tampons. For more information on how to make your donation and how you can support us please contact us at; info@positiveyouth.org.uk  .This project was set up after the founder of PYP visited Zimbabwe in April 2009 and was approached by a young woman who asked for a sanitary pad which she intended to use at a wedding the next day. 'On one of my visits to Zimbabwe I was approached by a young woman (17) who asked for a sanitary pad because she was going to a wedding the next day and she wanted to feel 'normal' instead of using the rags that she had been using. She explained how at one point she had used newspaper as sanitary ware as she could not afford to buy normal pads or knickers. Other young women told me how they missed school for a few days every month when they are on their period.'  This campaign aims to provide sanitary products to young girls in schools and colleges in order to ensure they do not miss out on important lessons. The Dignity Restored campaign has so far reached out to over 500 girls in the past year. We have been approached by various groups for donations  and can never have enough sanitary wear and underwear. We are also making efforts to set up a  sustainable project  in partnership with another charity whereby young girls in Zimbabwe will be able to make and sell reusable sanitary products, this will be part of the PYP 'Youth Box' project.

THE SPONSOR A YOUTH PROJECT

While youth today are spoilt for choices not only when it comes to securing an education and career but especially where lifestyle choices are concerned, the truth is that a majority of youth in Zimbabwe do not get the privilege of making this choice. sewinggirls.JPGTheir lives are ridden with problems ranging from financial difficulties, lack of educational opportunities, to unemployment and more - just because they were born into a particular stratum of society. PYP has been sponsoring young people to enrol in vocational training courses for the past 2 years. Blessing (21) is one of our first students to graduate from a 'Cutting and Designing course'. She says,'I would like to thank PYP for sponsoring me on my course, without them my future would have been bleak. I have since graduated from 'Cutting and Designing' school and have managed to secure a job in South Africa. Thank you PYP!'PYP sponsors young people to get vocational training in; Dress making, carpentry, Welding, Building and Agriculture. We are in need of sewing machines as well as computers for this project. To sponsor a young person please contact us info@positiveyouth.org.uk
